Athabascan birch bark baskets are traditionally made by Athabascan women in a variety of shapes and sizes. Birch bark is strong, waterproof, and flexible. Before conventional containers became available, the Athabascan Indians of interior Alaska used birch bark baskets to hold water and food items. Birch bark baskets have been made for about 2,000 years.
